Let me start by saying I plan on joining the countless fans buzzing about Las Vegas, NV for the excitement of this fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend. That said, I am going more for the hype of the mega event and to have a great time with several of my closest friends and boxing fans.

It’s always a blast being in Vegas for a big fight; however, I am going understanding I may not see the best fight of the year (FOY). It may not even be one of the top five FOY’s which has already seen a war between Tim Bradley vs. Ruslan Provodnikov and an epic rematch between Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado. Those FOY candidates along with the upcoming September matchup between Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse and the October bout between JM Marquez and Tim Bradley are all likely to be in the running for FOY. Unfortunately, this fight will not be and may have many feeling like they did after Mayweather vs. Guerrero…….Unsatisfied.

I know many Canelo Alvarez fans out there will not be happy with this, but as I have said before, he is not ready for Floyd Mayweather. Unfortunately, Floyd is aging and Canelo is a hot commodity in boxing. They both carry enormous star power, and right now there is no bigger or more popular fight out there. It’s just not the best matchup. There is always a puncher’s chance, but if he couldn’t knock out Austin Trout, why would you think he can stop Mayweather. Even Canelo fans can’t possibly think that he can out box or out score the best fighter in the world. So, that leaves the multi-million dollar question of who will remain undefeated. Will it be the up and coming 23 year old Mexican superstar or the still dominating, best fighter in the world, 36 year old Floyd Mayweather?

Just one month from his dominating performance over Robert Guerrero, I would not expect Mayweather to be suffering from the ill effects of father time four months from now. If anything, I would expect Mayweather to be even sharper for this one. For Canelo fans (and I am one), it would have been better for this fight to happen a year from now or more. However, an upset win over Mayweather right now would negate comments that Mayweather was past his prime given his recent performances, whereas a win by Canelo in a year or two may not have held as much weight or significance. Should Mayweather win, it will be expected by most in the boxing world. Subsequently, both Canelo fans and the general boxing public, will end up saying the young star was just not ready when this one is over. I think one more tuneup fight with, say Miguel Cotto, would have been more ideal at this point.

Anyway, despite what has already been said about this fight the last 48 hours, we are all excited so let’s get the bantering going and build up the hype and excitement for the next four months. Just don’t expect a FOY candidate.

  1. I know Canelo is a very good fighter… But some of you people seem to have a “MAN CRUSH” on this kid and see things in an unrealistic way. Yes, he is good, but its very unlikely he’ll beat Mayweather.. He has a HUGE future in this sport that’s for sure, but he is NOT the best yet… He still have a lot to prove. The only notable victories are Trout and OLD Mosley. Before I upset any Canelo Lovers, let me just say that I DO like the kid and I will pay to watch him fight any day. I am not disagreeing that he is the next one in line for this Mega fight and huge payday. He has earned and deserves this big shot. A loss to Mayweather is NOT going to demeanish his reputation. All that’s going to happen is that EVERYBODY will agree that the kid was not ready for Mayweather. But until than this post is just going to piss people off and give me a thumbs down. But when the day comes I will re-post and say… “I told you so!!” LOL… GO CANELO!!!

  2. Canelo will b mucho weak to make 152lbs….then on top of that when he steps in the ring he will well over 160lbs…So stamina will b a factor…..Skills pays the Bills folks…..$$$$May should win….if not he needs to get all his Boxing gear make a pile & light it on Fire…..lol….

  3. Canelo will destroy cotto! dont know what you guys are thinking?Cotto said it him self .”won’t take that much punishment I have a family to think about”.
And sorry to say he will take a bitting from Canelo!!

  4. I totally agree with many of the post about this fight ,I will say this I think canello is ready,I think mayweather has had his day in the spotlight, not saying he wasnt a great fighter in early days. I saw him in every fight since his 4th fight. Canelo knows he has a lot to prove. I think the hype of this fight will propel him to a whole new level in boxing, as far as his abilities go. I dont think inside Canelo really knows just how great he is. I would be very happy to watch this fight ,if it were held in a phone booth, and mayweather would have no place to flash and run. I never really saw that tatic as being a great boxer. Ali ,we all know how great he was ,said the rope a dope deal saved many wins for him, he knew it was not a fan pleaser, but it did allow him to survive. Canelo is going to have to pick sparing parners that can really use their legs, and allow him to get use to chasing his prey. I still think he is the best thing to come out of mexico, since Chavez who we all know was an all time ,great. Canelo reminds me of salvador sanchez. for you who are too young to remember him, google him, once of the best ever , died way too early in life. Mayweather will surely have to have his best game to keep up with Canelo,no matter what ,the kid is acoming.

  5. Now many people think canelo doesnt have footwork… He does i have seen it back in mexico… Againstrout people portrayed him as a static fighter but i toughthe came in with the best defense in a while… Now i dont know why he hasnt used his footwork since he joined golden boy but my guess is hes trying to build a large fan base, specially here in the U.S. people who discard him as only as a power puncher are in for a surprise.

  6. What will be a big factor is mayweather going up in weight to 152, that is if he goes up in weight which i doubt because canelo will be lighter and faster where as may will be a little slower.
In my opinion, weight was a factor for cottos erformance against may. Cotto had already a few fights at 154 where mayweather hadnt fought in years at that weight class. Thats why he looked a little slower against cotto.

If may makes the weight, theres a good chance he will loose speed and that will be a factor for canelos chance to impress.

  7. Sigh…too much too soon is what the theme will be after Canelo’s lack of defense AND offense exposed and realized. Yes Canelo has power but his last fight against Trout showed the world he relys to much on his power. I agree with Maestas that Canelo has the punchers chance which is why many will be watching and hoping Mayweather will finally get dropped!

  8. Yup! That’s one match I would have love to see. Cotto is still a big name in boxing and their styles would of made an action fight… I agree, Canelo is not ready for this fight and will get outboxed and loose a twelve round fight on a unanimous decision. That being said, this could be a now or never opportunity for Canelo with Mayweather looking to retire soon. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this mega fight and payday than this UNDEFEATED kid… So ready or not, it’s a done deal. Let’s all get on board and enjoy the big fight. As long as he beats everyone else a loss to Mayweather will never look bad. My respects for Mayweather for always taking on fighters that are coming out of big wins. That’s the way it should be! Pacqueao is fighting Rios next. A good victory over Rios could possibly ignite this DREAM again!
