GGG vs. Matthew Macklin THIS Saturday

ggg-boxerFireworks will ignite THIS Saturday night as Gennady Golovkin will go toe-to-toe against challenger Matthew Macklin in their HBO championship bout taking place in the MGM Grand Theatre at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.

I recently had a chance to chat with Golovkin (known as “GGG”) as he, trainer Abel Sanchez and K2 Promotions’ Tom Loeffler readied for the June 29 battle against “Mack the Knife” Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs), speaking with a group of media at Le Petit Greek in Los Angeles.

Gennady is an undefeated middleweight champ (26-0, 23 KOs) who will be squaring off in what could be his toughest foe to date. This Golovkin vs. Macklin feud is scheduled for 12 rounds and is promoted by K2 Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.

Hear what Team GGG has to say in my VIDEO IINTERVIEW below.

Golovkin is the reigning WBA and IBO Middleweight Champion and a former amateur star with over 350 bouts logged in. The Kazakh slugger fought for the first time in the U.S. last September. Since then, he and his team have been riding a wave of momentum as “GGG” continues to gain more boxing fans across the universe.

The KO artist also acknowledges that the Mackin war could be a “difficult and close” fight as the camp never underestimates any opponent. Training out of the The Summit in Big Bear, listen in on how sparring is going, how he stays focused and what it’s like living the American dream. And you’ll also hear about one wildly popular movie Gennady is NOT a fan of.

Always cheerful, always with a smile, Golovkin drops the grin only once during our conversation. He gets a lot of “BORAT” comparisons and touches on this topic. He tells me that he does NOT think the cult classic film starring Sacha Baron Cohen is humorous at all. The boxer feels it mocks what his home country is really like. Gennady says it’s not funny, not true–and is not how Kazakhstan is like at all.

While he resides in Germany, Triple G remains proud of his Karaganda upbringing. Off camera, he continued to explain to me that his homeland is very beautiful and not at all how it was portrayed in the outrageous comedy that still gets him riled up. He is a boxing hero in Russia and beyond; Golovkin’s profile continues to rise and a convincing victory over Macklin can further push the 31-year-old into worldwide superstar status. His camp says he will remain busy in the next few months with at least one–if not two more fights–on the horizon before the year ends.

Boxing aficionados would love to see him lock horns with some champs in and above his weight division with names such as Sergio Martinez, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Andre Ward, Carl Froch, Martin Murray, Peter Quillin and others being some of the targets the fans would love to see Golovkin take aim at.

His team says GGG is the “best middleweight in the world” and hope to get a statement win this weekend in Connecticut.
