arumThe negotiations for an October 19th bout in Denver, CO is all but done between Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov. Bob Arum and Top Rank just need to finalize the purse for Alvarado who continues to be a fan favorite.

Both fighters have been involved in fights deserving of fight of the year mention in the first half of 2013. Alvarado was last in a bloody battle on March 30th in a win over Brandon Rios while just prior to that, Provodnikov lost a very close fight to world champion Timothy Bradley after knocking the champion down twice and having him out on his fight on several occasions.

That said, a bout between Alvarado and Provodnikov is sure to be another crowd pleasing, instant boxing classic. Subsequently, the pride of 303/Mile High City (Alvarado) deserves to fight in his back yard and to be paid like a world champion prize fighter. Bob Arum recently indicated the fight is all but done. He just needs to get HBO to throw in a “few more bucks.”

Mike Alvarado commented on Twitter this week, “Lets put it this way. I’m not gonna take A LOT less money to fight Provo than Tim Bradley did. I’ve been in war after war. I’m just as good….My last 4 fights been fight of the year candidates. I’m very grateful to Top Rank but it’s my turn to get paid like a world champ.”

Alvarado is absolutely right. He continues to be a crowd pleasing fan favorite as he draws and spills blood for us, fight after fight. Who out there in boxing deserves to be paid like a top fighter more than Alvarado? For all of us working class fans, I am sure you can appreciate the way he brings his hard hat into the ring. He is old testament; a beast and straight gangsta in the ring. Let’s go Arum.

Pay him. Pay him his money! What do the fans say?

  1. Mr. Joe. The gangsta statement is simply a figure of speech for how Alvarado fights in the ring. It’s figurative so don’t get your feathers ruffled ol buddy, lol. I am by no means promoting disrespectful or true gangster/gang banger lifestyles or personalities. And you can’t tell me or other boxing fans (Alvarado fans or not) that his style and his fights are not entertaining or intriguing. On a side note, you just can’t compare generations. They are not retroactive and things will never be the same; no disrespect. But since you are, just as many old fighters said plenty of dumb things or “trash” as you say. There are also plenty of African American and Mexican American fighters today who say and do the right things and say a little more than trash. Now that’s GANGSTA 🙂

  2. I hope Rudy Hernandez is in his corner, he is going to need him, I don’t know about the straight Gangsta stuff, on less is just a matter of speach, theses new generation of Black & Mexican American boxers for the most part need an education outside the ring they talk with no respect for US the viewers/boxing fans, everything that comes out of their mouths is for the most part TRASH, it would be good for them & their image, instead of Ganstas they should be roll models for the upcoming generations, let’s not patronage the Gangsta culture, there is enough of that already we don’t need anymore than what we already have…
