In what has been a platform for fighters to jump to the HBO and Showtime level, NBC Sports Fight Night and Main Events have yet again given fighters an audience to audition for. Last Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Arena, both Curtis Stevens and Tomasz Adamek received positive acceptance as future HBO fighters. Stevens, who has moved to middleweight as he resurrects his career, continues to dominate fighters all while calling out Gennady Golovkin. Yes, Curtis has not faced an elite middleweight, but he has blown out each and every single one of his foe’s in dynamite style. Squaring off against rugged Mexican Saul Roman, Stevens obliterated Roman in less than 3 minutes, laying him cold on his back with a beautifully timed left hook. Roman had not been knocked out since 2010 and not in the 1st round since 2002. In what was a quick and easy night, Curtis continues to make a strong statement on if it is not Golovkin, he should still be considered for an HBO fight.

1Also on the card was former cruiserweight and light heavyweight champion, Tomasz Adamek. Campaigning at heavyweight, Adamek has not seemed to have the spark he possessed prior to being stopped by Vitali Klistchko. In 3 very competitive wins with 2 highly disputed, Adamek seemed to be on the decline. Fighting against one of the former heavyweight hopefuls Dominick Guinn, Adamek not only won, but showed pre Klistchko spark and freshness. It has been mentioned that Adamek may fight fellow NBC Sports Fight Night star Bryant Jennings on HBO. This is a very interesting fight which would propel the winner into the top of title contenders. Even more excitingly, there seems to be a slight increase in spending on heavyweights from major networks, setting up future big heavyweight fights.

3In the opening bout, formerly unknown cruiserweight Thabiso Mchunu dominated Eddie Chambers in his cruiserweight debut. Chambers, who found himself on top of the heavyweight contenders for quite some time seemed confused and troubled with Mchunu. While Chambers did not seem to possess the magic he maintained as a heavyweight, Mchunu showed the world his skills and would have made a win difficult for any good cruiserweight. For Mchunu, he now has had a platform win against a bigger name, while Chambers may have received a blessing in disguise. Previously seen as a huge threat, big fights at cruiser weight have eluded Chambers. Assuming he chooses to return, his vulnerability may give him the opportunity to land a big fight against one of the champions.

As we’ve learned this weekend, NBC Sports continues to give fighters the opportunity to show off their skills and continue to move up to the next level. Hopefully we see Stevens get a shot as well as the crossroads bout between Jennings and Adamek.
