He’s your favorite book or movie. You’ve read the book or watched the movie more than a few times, you know where the funny parts are, favorite quotes and you know the ending. Yet you still read each chapter hoping to find a different meaning or hoping to watch your characters final plea to a lost love turn out differently.

That is Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

He may be a little older but just as your favorite book has some wear on it over the years- the story is the same.

This past weekends from the “Home” of Mayweather- MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mayweather once again displayed his well versed boxing skills. He grabbed your attention in the first chapter when he announced he was facing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, kept your attention through the entire press tour and during the extravagant weigh-in spectacle and right before the final chapter one could almost see a different ending, yet as the final page turned, you realized it was the same ending once again.

For some it was happy, others it was another heartbreak. The good guy doesn’t get the girl or ride off in the sunset in the Mayweather story. Rather they are left wondering if they could have done more.

The simple answer is no.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., Canelo AlvarezMayweather is a story that requires no edits or rewrites. He is a classic book that even with all the flaws his character has and at times he can turn off a majority of fans, the talent, the intrigue of what he brings to the table is undeniable. Even some of the best books are now in paperback. The same is true for Mayweather.

He displayed the same set of boxing skills that fans have been accustomed to seeing over the past decade. Superior defense, great speed and just enough power to keep his opponents honest and hesitant to try and brawl with Mayweather. Add the jab followed by the overhand right and his other set of boxing skills and once again he proved that even though he may have a shiny new cover the book is the same.

Marquez, Ortiz, Hatton, De La Hoya, Guerrero, Mosley and now Canelo all have faced the same ending. Simply too much speed and defense to overcome. As Mayweather has stated, “there is no blue print” to beat him. There is also no fighter in the game today that can match him in skill set.

So now fans will wait for the next Mayweather release to come out. Most likely, May of next year. Yet it really doesn’t matter. The ending will be the same just a new face and a shiny new package to claim they have the right game plan, power or because it’s their destiny. However, the final chapter will remind you- there is nothing new to the next opponent.

Just a new name to add to the list of fighters Mayweather has beat.

  1. Well said and so true. I keep reading the same book despite already knowing the outcome. No other fighter despite Ali has impacted boxing quite like Mayweather has.
