Just when fans started talking again of how Miguel Cotto (38-4) was washed up and on the downside of his career, he finds himself back on top of Boxing and in great position to do whatever he chooses. The newly turned 33 year old, fresh off a win over Delvin Rodriguez is in a better position than anyone in Boxing other than Floyd Mayweather.

After an impressive victory over Rodriguez, the perception and direction of Cotto’s career changed at the flip of a switch. Subsequently, and with trainer Freddie Roach saying “Line’em up” in regard to who the junior middleweight’s next oppenent could be, many of boxing’s biggest names are coming up, along with Cotto’s pocket. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has already offered Cotto an eight figure salary, well over 10 million dollars, to fight Canelo Alvarez in March. Cotto is also considering moving up to middleweight to fight WBC Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez to try and win a title in a fourth weight division, although Martinez’ health is in question. A title fight with WBO Middleweight Champion Peter Quillin has also bee mentioned.

Regardless of which aforementioned fighter Cotto chooses to go with, he is in the driver’s seat for several reasons. Not only is he in this enviable position because of his remarkable popularity and star power, but Miguel Cotto is also not tied down by either Top Rank or Golden Boy Promotions. He is essentially a free agent who has good relationships with both companies as well as both Showtime and HBO networks. Not bad for someone who was coming off back to back losses in 2012, to Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout. With all that said, life is good for the Puerto Rican superstar.

So, what is next for Cotto? Will it be a PPV fight on Showtime with Canelo Alvarez in March, a PPV fight on HBO with Sergio Martinez in June, or someone entirely different? No matter what, it’s his choice, and with a victory, he just might end up facing the other fighter who is always in control, Floyd Mayweather.

If everything works out they way the map is leading us, look for another super fight with Floyd Mayweather in September 2014, in Las Vegas for Mexican Independence Day weekend. However, you know as well as I do, almost nothing in Boxing goes as planned but it’s always exciting playing matchmaker in our heads.

Jimmy Young, and so many of the great contender’s, and ex-champions that are always in the thick of it, but deserve the recognition of what the Heart of a Fighter is all about.
