Rios-Pacquiao

I was certain that before last weekends fight between Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios that I was done paying or watching Pacquiao and Mayweather. While both have done all they can for the beloved sport of boxing these two have also single handily shown why boxing is a joke to non fans due to the repeated failure to face one another over disputes of money and other issues that from the outside look nothing more than male bravado and posturing, yet as I finally got around to watching the Pacquiao-Rios fight I realized that as much as I have had my fill of Pacquiao fights, he is also truly entertaining and fun to watch.

While Pacquiao still has great speed and good power it’s his ability to make most of his fights entertaining. Aside from his Clottey fight, Pacquiao has consistently been put in with opposition that makes for entertaining bouts and more importantly it seems as if Pacquiao enjoys trading shots as well and unlike like Mayweather who is typically unwilling to exchange in the same manner as Pacquaio, Pac will trade shots. Perhaps it is because Pac lacks the same skill as Mayweather none less it is far more entertaining and it is that sole reason that while I told myself I was done watching Pacquiao and Mayweather, it may just be Mayweather I am done with watching. I could also do without Freddie Roach stating that Pacquiao will knockout every opponent he will face from here on out.

If you would have asked me a month ago which fight card this upcoming weekend was better Showtime’s Malignaggi vs Judah or HBO Rigondeaux vs Agbeko I would have probably said Malignaggi vs Judah but while the Goldenboy fights have better hype around them especially since it has Austin Trout vs Erislandy Lara the Top Rank card from Atlantic City has the better exciting boxing match ups.

Guillermo Rigondeaux vs Joseph Agbeko and James Kirkland vs Glen Tapia are fights that actually are worth the price of admission. While Barclays in Brooklyn, New York is a more ideal place than Atlantic City, New Jersey, Top Rank should win this fight card face off this weekend.

I would love to see Bernard Hopkins face Adonis Stevenson. While the consensus of fans may want Kovalev instead, that fight should simmer a little longer. While fight fans know who both heavy hitters are the general public has no clue who these guys are. Typically that would not matter but personally these two deserve more hype and promotion for what would be a thrilling event for however long it will last when they face one another.

Which is why a Hopkins bout would be beneficial, Hopkins is a great ambassador of boxing, add that Hopkins is great at promoting his fights along with his ability to get under his opponents skin it would be worth the build up to a fight that Hopkins could win.

If I had to base my point of view of Andre Ward based solely off of social media, I would say he has a small fan base and a far larger base that could care less about his fights. Perhaps a majority of fans are turned off by the way he carries himself when he is commentating. Regardless, he is one of the best in the game today. He may not have the knockout power fight fans love but he can outbox anyone and it’s something to appreciate.

2013 has shaped up to be a pretty good year of boxing. Timothy Bradley has come into his own as well as Danny Garcia proving to a more than his fathers hype machine, without a doubt both deserve to be considered fighter of the year. Can we please stop giving Maidana anything more than a punchers change against Broner next week. However if Maidana does clip Broner I am curious to see if Broner has the chin. And lastly, did anyone hear Shane Mosley lost once again? First Roy Jones jr and now Mosley continue to fight long after they should have hung em up. Here’s to hoping they stop sooner than later.

It was 13 years ago this past 2nd of December that a young 23 year old Fernando Vargas faces Felix “Tito” Trinidad in Las Vegas, Nevada. This fight was the one that turned me into a hardcore boxing fan. I suppose it can be considered a classic but to me this fight is still fresh in my mind, best fight I’ve been to live. If you have some time to kill check it out.
