Alamo Dome (San Antonio, Texas) – Last night “The Problem” was solved, but to tell the truth, Adien Broner was never really a problem for Marcos “El Chino” Maidana. Other than punching himself out in certain rounds of the fight, Broner was no match for the always dangerous Maidana, who threw and landed twice as many punches as Broner. That said, it was Maidana, not Broner, who could not be solved, dropping Broner in the second and the eighth rounds for the first time in Broner’s career. Maidana won the fight by unanimous decision with judges’ scores of 115-110, 116-109, and 117-109.

From the opening 30 seconds of the fight, Broner struggled with Maidana’s power. Maidana was ruthlesss in his assault of overhand rights and constant body work, and as is typical for Broner, he had plenty of tasteless and dirty tactics during the fight. At the end of the first round, after getting rocked several times, he used a dry humping motion when Maidana’s back was turned to him, although Maidana did mock him back at the end of the fight when Broner was defeated. Broner detractors had to love the karma Broner experienced in this one.

Referee Laurence Cole warned Broner constantly throughout the fight for dirty tactics but never took a point from him. However, in the eighth round, Cole took a point from Maidana for a headbutt which was in response to Broner holding and pinning his arms after getting up from the second knockdown. After what what would have been another 10-8 round for Maidana, the penalty created an opportunity for Broner to get out of the fight; however, the rignside doctor checked him out and said he was fine. Despite the foul, nobody at ringside blamed Maidana for the headbutt as he was only trying to free his arms and finish the flailing and overrated Broner.

Ringside announcer Paulie Malignaggi said in the postfight comments that the headbutt by Maidana was not significant enough to hurt Broner; and he was calling Broner out, because in his opinion Broner was looking for a way out of the fight! To me, Broner simply looked like a helpless child in the eighth round throwing a tantrum rolling around on the canvas, making a fool of himself. He was in a hostile environment in front of the San Antonio crowd, who was in full support of Maidana. As Broner shamefully pouted and walked out of the ring without comment, fans were throwing drinks and flipping off Broner while yelling obscenities. Although I don’t necessarily agree with the fan behavior, it was karma and just deserts for the young and humbled fighter.

I have always felt Broner was a manufactured and self inflated fighter, who would struggle when he fought a real welterweight with power. It was very satisfying to see him get beat and unfortunately for him, I see him having similar problems with many of the fellas out there at 147. Broner, you are no Mayweather and the way you carry yourself as a fighter is a disgrace to the sport. The way you carry yourself as a person is a disgrace to yourself, and it is a complete joke you and your fans put yourself in the same league or that you should even be mentioned in the same breath as Mayweather, who is arguably the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time). Grow up little fella and enjoy your holiday humble pie.

As for Maidana, WOW and good for the new WBA Welterweight Champion. There are so many fights out there which boxing fans would like to see with Maidana in 2014. Fellow boxing enthusiast and friend Michael Gallegos and I discussed a Maidana vs. Matthysse, Maidana vs. Garcia, or even a Maidana vs. Thurman fight. So much talent out there at 147!

  1. All I can say is when you come out to a professional boxing match, while having identity problems and can’t decide who you are today, lil’wayne, Mayweather or Pinky from Next Friday – you’re bound to take one in the KISSA! haha

  2. If floyd mayweather was the best of all time he would of fought canelo at middleweight, because everyone was saying floyd is fighting him now because this year canelo will move up to middleweight, yet he makes canelo drop 2 extra lbs, that is why respected writers of boxing and most old school boxing fan’s will never give mayweather the respect he craves.

  3. Glad to see a fight’s outcome go untainted/uncontested. Every so often you see a fight where a brawler (Provodnikov vs. Bradley) who clearly out brawls his opponent, but because the other fighter is more technical (lands more percentage of his punches) wins a fight. Maidana in this fight covered both, he out punched and out brawled “little fella.” Maestas, as always, accurate on your fight analysis. However, one point of contention, I don’t know who was insulted more, Mayweather or Broner. At least Broner tried to fight and not solely rely on his defense to win a fight. I will give Mayweather credit for being able to elevate the sport of boxing to a whole new level, but ultimately he will eventually have to actually brawl again in the sport of boxing.

  4. Thanks to Maidana , all boxing fans received an early holiday gift ! Watching Broner looking for a way out of that good old fashion beat-down was my favorite boxing moment of 2013. I wonder if “About Billions” has saved his money ? If he hasn’t , he’s going to regret not doing so, because there’s a-lot of boxer’s out there now just dying to be one of his next opponents.

  5. We’ll said Maestas. What a joke for that overrated punk to think he had a chance to beat such a strong fighter like Maidana. I have a feeling he’ll go back to humping on weaker fighters for a while where its safer to talk trash and brush his hair!!

  6. Watching the fight reminds me how tough a sport boxing is and the guys at the top are just so dam good. Broner has some skill but he’s not at the level of a Maidana. In boxing at the end of the day you better have heart, boxing skills, strong mind, and great preperation because your mouth can’t punch. Lol

  7. Adrien Broner is just another fighter who think that he’s so good that he can underestimate the skills of other fighters. These young arrogant egotistical fighters have been exposed, time and time again for being too cocky. They all trying to be Muhammad Ali, without having to pay there dues. This is not a sport that you can take for granted that you’re so good, that you’re untouchable. All it takes is, one punch that you did’nt see coming, and that can change your whole stratergy. Lets see what you’re made of now Adrien-The Problem-Broner, now that the prolem have been solved. Good Luck young man. Norman Carter.
