President of the WBC Jose Sulaiman died today at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, he was 82 years-old. In October he had a double bypass surgery with some complications that delayed his recovery.

He also had issues with diabetes. He was moved to a physical rehabilitation center but after 100 days being hospitalized, he wasn’t able to recover. He passed away this afternoon.

Sulaimán boxed as an amateur and has served as a trainer, promoter, referee and judge. However, he is best known as an administrator for more than three decades. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on June 10, 2007.

  1. This kind’a leaves me with mixed emotions. Over the years I’ve studied Don Jose’s deeds, the good, not so good and some close to evil. How he sold out for the benefit of humanity and.. to the “devils” of the sport. Snatched opportunities and titles from honest hard working fighters for the persona agendas & interest and for his fellow boxing countrymen. Who can deny that he made solid ground breaking decisions and many deeds out of the goodness of his heart and maybe sometimes to polish his/WBC image. Most of mis-deeds occurred after he bankrupted his beloved WBC after losing that $30 million lawsuit for illegally stripping champion Graciano Rocchigiani in favor of Roy Jones, simply because the more popular Roy wanted the title (he had relinquished) returned to him. Some 6 years later there was a settlement but to make up the losses the WBC went resorted to diverse measures & extremes, some actually good for the benefit of the boxers and others down right outrageous and offensive to the minds and hearts of others, including the fans. That being said I hope that Mauricio Suliaman, his son and heir, will polish up the WBC and bestow honor to the memory of his father, Don Jose Suliaman. May God rest his soul.
