Media Kickoff for May 16 Show!
It’s been 14 years since Thompson Boxing Promotions hosted their very first fight in Southern California.
It all started back on May 22, 2000 when President Ken Thompson and General Manager Alex Camponovo entered into the professional fight biz with a Carlos Bojorquez vs. Rosember Palacios main event in Ontario, Calif. Since then, the Inland Empire company has never looked back. Thompson Boxing has been full throttle ahead since that very first punch was thrown and they will now celebrate their 14th Anniversary in the fight game.
The celebration was kicked off yesterday to announce their upcoming May 16 “New Blood” card at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario. The media luncheon was held in this same hotel where more than 1,800 fighters and over 225,000 boxing fans have witnessed the non-stop action Thompson Boxing has trademarked during their decade and a half of promoting fights.
Through the years, I’ve attended many of their shows. Along the way I’ve watched the promotional outfit build and cultivate their homegrown boxing stars and champs like Josesito Lopez, Timothy Bradley, Mauricio Herrera, Juan Carlos Burgos, Jhonatan Romero, Yonnhy Perez, and more. Their “New Blood,” “Locked N’ Loaded” and “Path to Glory” cards at the DoubleTree and Omega Products International have provided plenty of fireworks inside the ropes.
And on Friday, May 16, there will be three championship bouts showcased with a total of six bouts scheduled on this historic show. In honor of this special night, all of the prizefighters vying for a title were in attendance at Wednesday’s presser.
The headliners Jose “El Gato” Roman and Luis Solis will be battling for the WBC CABOFE Lightweight title between these two talented fighters; a highly anticipated co-main will pit SoCal punchers Juan “Pochito” Reyes and Isaac “Dinamita” Zarate against each other for the vacant NABF Junior Super Bantamweight belt. And the third part of this triple header will be a female clash between IFBA Light Flyweight champ Sindy “La Alacrana” Amador vs. challenger Maria Suarez, hailing from Santa Maria, Calif.
Three championship bouts in one night.
Announcing this upcoming affair was ring emcee Sonny Franco. As the attendees finished their luncheon at this classy event, the lights dimmed and the stage darkened.
Dramatic lighting filled the room as Ken Thompson, Alex Camponovo and the six athletes took to the VIP dais.
Ring announcer Franco was flanked by the lovely ring card girls Chantel Zales and Ashley Nicole. The ladies held up commemorative signs ushering in the 14th Anniversary for Thompson Boxing Promotions. Each fighter expressed gratitude and excitement about being part of this special evening of boxing.
And both Thompson and Camponovo traveled down “Memory Lane” telling the crowd their highlights and memories from the past 14 years.
After the speeches, the prizefighters mingled with the crowd, posing for photos and meeting with the media.
The pair of ring card beauties were also a big hit with the audience, getting their fair share of the flashbulbs popping. If the two models look familiar to you, it may be because Chantel is a huge draw on Instagram (with over 540,000 followers) and Ashley will be featured in the 2015 Tilted Kilt calendar. Fans just may get a chance to meet them and other popular ring card girls at future shows with Thompson Boxing.
And local shows like these are the best way to see rising talent, hungry prospects, future superstars and champions in the making at an affordable price for the boxing fan. A lot of action and entertainment always goes down at each and every Thompson show.
The “New Blood” boxers will trade leather on May 16 in what should be some fierce competition.
