As Floyd Mayweather (47-0) approaches 500 million dollars in career earnings, the interest in his fights is going down. Since his 2013 fight against Canelo Alvarez, which boasted 2.2 million PPV buys, each of his last two fights against Marcos Maidana only generated around 900 thousand PPV buys. Both fights generated significantly less interest than any of his fights since 2007, when he pounced Ricky Hatton. That fight generated 920 thousand PPV buys.

Although the most anticipated fight for the last decade between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao makes sense financially, and would generate close to 2.5 million PPV buys (which would break the current 2.4 million record set by Mayweather vs. De La Hoya in 2007), this fight is a long way off from happening despite recent hopes and rumblings from wishful fans and media.

That said, Mayweather should move over in 2015, and give up the popular boxing weekend in Las Vegas for Cinco De Mayo in favor of a possible fight between Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. Other than a NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN fight beween Mayweather and Pacquiao, this is one of the most popular and lucrative fights out there right now. It is certainly more likely to have a deal done in 2015 than a fight ever being signed between the two Parker Brothers and promotors.

If a deal is not worked out for Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto, don’t count out a rematch for one of them against Mayweather in 2015, although I would not hold my breath. Either way, if Mayweather is not going to agree to a blockbuster fight in May or September, he should step aside for the always much-anticipated Mexican fight weekends for venues and fights that will be much more pleasing and worth $64.99 to paying boxing fans.

By the way, no thanks to you either Manny, in your underselling and non-entertaining fight in China against a great guy, but not a great fighter in Chris Algeiri. Two thumbs down.
