The much anticipated trilogy match at the 1st Bank Event Center in Broomfield, CO was not what fans had envisioned. Rather than a competitive and entertaining brawl that media and fans had hoped for and truly expected, it was unfortunately a one-sided destruction of an ill-prepared fighter. Brandon Rios (33-2-1, 24 KO’s) came out very strong and punished Mike Alvarado (34-4, 23 KO’s) from the first round on, until the fight was stopped in Alvarado’s corner after Jay Nady waived it off at the advice of the ringside doctor before the start of the fourth round. It appeared Alvarado was having vision problems; however, with a battered face that looked like it has already been through a 12-round war, people at ringside as well as those watching on HBO thought they saw and hard Alvarado quit.

Regardless of how or who suggested the fight be stopped, it was obvious that Rios was the superior fighter, and Alvarado was nothing more than a punching bag completely undeserving of the $785,000 purse he earned for his lack of effort. It was over from the first series of punches Rios landed in the first round as Rios stalked Alvarado relentlessly; then Rios continued the brutal beating and buckled Alvarado in the second round before Alvarado landed a low blow that gave him a much needed breather; in the third round, Rios landed a brutal right upper-cut that put Alvarado to his knee and he barely finished the round. Alvarado was bloodied and winded from start to finsish and truly looked terrible.

With the win and the WBO International Welterweight Title, Rios was very deserving of the $850,000 he earned and is already guaranteed a huge fight by Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum. After the fight, Rios was very excited and emotional and climbed the ring post facing press row and emphatically pounded his chest yelling “I’m back!” His performance definitely justified his response given his battery of Alvarado won back fans and put him back in the mix for other top fights. Names like Bradley and Cotto were mentioned by Arum. However, another interesting name who was discussed amongst media over weekend was Terrance Crawford who was present for the weigh-ins and the fight.
For Alvarado, it’s a much different story. It is the second straight fight in his hometown that he was unable to answer the bell for another round. His fight was also stopped in the corner when he fought Provodnikov in 2013. However, his performance this time around was so bad that his own fans in a nearly sold out arena were booing him after the fight and yelling explicative regarding him not training seriously, as well as bashing him for his recent legal troubles and rumors of partying rather than training.

I had previously wrote that fans and those closest to Alvarado can only hope that he will get it together someday. Unfortunately, it does not look like that is going to happen. With three straight losses where he suffered significant damage, his looming legal troubles, and harsh words from Promotor Bob Arum, Alvarado’s future in boxing looks very bleak and deservedly so. To put it bluntly, Mile High Mike was an utter embarrassment to his fans and the Mile High City.

People of all professions perform well when they prepare. When you don’t, it shows and competitors make you pay for it. Mike Alvarado was destroyed and embarrassed in front of his home crowd because he is simply not a professional and he did not prepare. Rios deserved the victory and obviously took the crossroads fight serious. Let’s hope he stays to form and does not slip in his own professionalism as he has also done in the past.

And Mike, you were right when you said your lack of preparation “is what it is!” It is GARBAGE!

  1. I disagree with you Norman, that Mayweather is not afraid of Manny. He shows it time and time again that he wants no part of a fighter who actually has the chance of beating him. Floyd is so OBSESSED with keeping his 0 that he will make any escuse to keep the fight from happening. He is embarassing himself and his fans. Can you imagine what would have happened if Floyd fought in the 80s! He would have not been mentioned at all. He would have avoided Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Pryor. Maybe he would have considered fighting Benitez and Pipino Cuevas but that’s it. He will never be considered the best of his era if he avoids Pacquaio. Period.

  2. The highly anticipated fight between Pac-man and Mayweather appears to be in doubt again. First of all, let me say this. Floyd is not now, or have ever been afraid to fight Manny, or any other fighter. People are so consumed with hatred, that they let it control there sense of rationality, and cause them to make comments thats based on there personal dislike for individuals, rather than there skills. I know Floyd is arrogant-annoying and irretating at times, however some people uses there ego as a motivating factor in achieving greatness in there chosen profession. He is a very talented fighter with extraordinary skills, and all the media and you hater do, is find ways to belittle him. Bob Arum is the one always trying to dictate the business aspect of the fight, by getting in the way. Floyd is a businessman, and refuses to let Arum, or anybody control his career, and i agree with him 100 percent. I have been a boxing fan for more than 50 years, hosted my own T V show, The Boxing Scene. I have seen Promoters ripped off Fighters, left them broke and destitute, and leave them totally ruined. So i don’t blame Floyd for getting all the accolades he can. He earned it, deserves it, and dam it, should have it his way. That’s the way i see it.
