When I tell people I just meet that I am a boxing fan it, two questions typically come up in conversation, Mike Tyson and Don King. It seems that for many people who have not paid attention to boxing over the past 15 or so years that these two names are not what they used to be in the boxing business. I mention this because now that boxing seems to have a new promotional juggernaut in the form of the highly successful boxing manager, Al Haymon and his new boxing promotional company Premier Boxing Champions. Many fans have become accustomed to Goldenboy promotions and Top Rank to slug it out over who was the boxing darling, Haymon had amassed a stable of top level talent. Floyd Mayweather, Adrien Broner, Amir Khan and Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. to name a few.

While Haymon is a man rarely seen and never interviewed but watch any major fight these days and you will see a guy or two from his camp in the ring with a number of fighters. But just as Tyson and King are no longer as big a part of boxing as they once were, Haymon is making his case as the biggest name in boxing and that title run starts this weekend with the NBC airing of two highly anticipated match-up in WBC Welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman vs former Lightweight and Welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in the main event and the Co-Main event that features Adrien Broner vs John Molina.

Premier Champions Boxing is not only airing fight on NBC, they also have fights scheduled with CBS and Spike TV.
These are major cable networks and something that Top Rank and Golden Boy never fully pull off and other than Main Events having some good fight cards on NBC sports, never has one promoter taken on such an ambitious task.

But will the solid match ups last after this shock and awe wave of exciting match ups? While I am not a Star Wars fan, however right now PCB feels like they can either go to the dark side or the light side. Yet, there really may not be either side and hopefully boxing fans get the fights that boxing fans want to see such as April 11th, Danny Garcia vs Lamont Peterson is one of a few that boxing fans have wanted to see and regardless of if any belt is on the line, if the end result is the fighters in the ring that boxing has hoped for will win out. Many of today’s boxing starts are signed to Haymon and with the team open for business with all major networks, only time will tell if PCB can sustain the level of intrigue and excitement they are throwing at boxing fans currently.

Haymon may rub many fight fans the wrong way with his savvy boxing business moves at times but it’s hard to argue that he doesn’t protect his fighters the way most would want to be protected and unlike the Golden Era of boxing where fighters fought the best regardless of the fight purse, today fighters are getting paid first and fighting second but they may also be matched up in some exciting bouts. This Saturday marks and new era in boxing, one that may be remembered for years to com.
