Vasquez-Martinez Showdown at STAPLES Center

TeamMartinez

Aron Martinez has been a pro since 2004. He’s one of those boxers that works hard, stays humble, always keeping his nose to the grindstone.

For the most part of his career he’s stayed out of the limelight, dutifully putting in time at the gym while balancing a longtime job in construction too. You won’t read about him sneaking off to strip clubs, lighting cash on fire or speeding off in a fancy sports car like many other prizefighters are apt to do once they get that money and fame.

Promoted by Thompson Boxing Promotions, Aron gained a legion of new fans in his controversial split decision loss to Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in June 2015. While he didn’t get the win, it was a moral victory for the SoCal boxer. Now Martinez, 34, will be featured as the co-main of the Danny “Swift” Garcia versus Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero headliner taking place THIS Saturday, January 23 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. This Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card (promoted by TGB Promotions) will be broadcast live on Fox and Fox Deportes 8PM ET/5PM PT.Aron2

“El Asesino” (20-4-1, 4 KOs) will be squaring off against unbeaten southpaw Sammy “The Who Can Mexican” Vasquez (20-0, 14 KOs). Once again pegged as the “underdog,” Aron knows he has to win this one especially since he will be fighting in his own backyard–and on the big stage as well. This Vasquez-Martinez bout is tabbed as a ten-round WBC Welterweight Semi-Final Title Eliminator.

I’ve known Aron for over 10 years now. He’s one of those pugs that just keeps plugging away because they love they sport, choosing to box because it’s in his blood. And longtime friends and supporters of Team Martinez are happy to see him succeed, happy to see Aron getting his shot in the limelight. Now it’s up to “El Asesino” to make the most of his time in the spotlight.

Aron “El Asesino” Martinez is comfortable in his role as the scrappy “underdog.” He is a self-described “old-school boxer and Mexican brawler” that has beaten the odds. And while he may be known as the dog in the game, one should consider him a live underdog, a warrior that shouldn’t be taken lightly by anyone.

“I’m always the underdog; it don’t bother me,” Martinez told me at a kickoff press conference for this January 23 matchup. Aron had his team of Thompson Boxing Promotions’ Alex Camponovo, chief trainer Mario “Yuca” Morales, manager Hector Morales (Lucas Oil) and Joshua Cortez with him.

“On paper, he’s supposed to beat me,” the Southern California fighter says of being the underdog once again. “Hopefully, he don’t take me for granted because that’s the biggest mistake a fighter can do.”

Aron has stayed under the radar while continuing to climb up the ranks in the sweet science. Owning his own construction business with fiancé Catrina, he is a dedicated family man with their daughter Mia. Growing up in the hardscrabble streets of East Los Angeles, Martinez attended Roosevelt High School while also Aron1studying at the “School of Hard Knocks.” Boxing is the family business; his brother Aalan Martinez is also a pro fighter. Training with Mario “Yuca” Morales at Azteca Boxing Gym, the welterweight says he’s looking forward to fighting in front of the local fans here in the Southland.

The hard-hitting Vasquez, 29, hails from Pennsylvania and is on the rise with 14 knockouts since turning pro in 2012. The sturdy Vasquez has youth, power and an unblemished record while Martinez has experience and tenaciousness while battling the likes of Robert Guerrero, Devon Alexander, Josesito Lopez, Jessie Vargas, Prenice Brewer, Alberto Herrera, Joseph Elegele, Dashon Johnson, and more.

On Saturday, January 23, the two gladiators will go toe to toe in what should be a crowd-pleasing scrap. On paper, Martinez doesn’t have the KO power that matches the lefty Vasquez, but don’t count this underdog out yet. Fighting the odds, Aron will give it his all to get the W in this rumble. “I’m used to fighting southpaws,” he says. “I’m excited and can’t wait for the day.”

Will Aron Martinez prove to be Vasquez’s toughest opponent to face? Will Sammy keep his perfect ledger? Or will the veteran Martinez pull of the upset?

Martinez says Vasquez still has the “amateur” style and that Martinez has the experience to win. We will see January 23 which combatant will prevail.

Fight fans, be sure to tune into Fox Sports as this fight night blasts off THIS Saturday!
