The calm of the Romanza gym in Mexico City was interrupted yesterday by television crews and reporters as the WBO and WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez began his first day of training
for his mega fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. scheduled for July 18th.
“I am sure that I am going to defeat Mayweather. I know that he is five inches taller, that he has a little bit more reach and that he is a great fighter but I know how to defeat him and that is what I am going to do on July 18th,” Marquez stated as he began his daily work out.
“It is not the first time that I am the underdog. For example, I have fought Manny Pacquiao twice and I was the underdog both times and although I lost one by points and the other we tied, I am sure that I won both fights,” Marquez stated matter of factly. “So much so that since then, he won’t fight me. He says that he waits to fight in November against Mayweather because he thinks that Floyd is going to beat me but in November I am going to be his rival unless he backs out again.”
