Mayweather is so good, his fights are boring; but the hype is a much different story

Once again Floyd Mayweather proved he is a class above anyone in boxing after completely dominating a younger and over-matched Canelo Alvarez. I hate to say I told you so to Canelo fans, but did you really expect anything different? Canelo was the newest and biggest hope to challenge Mayweather’s utter dominance of the sport; unfortunately, the result was no different.

Saturday night was business as usual for Mayweather. Although Canelo may have won a few of the early rounds, it was hard to give him any. Once Mayweather got into his usual rhythm, it was the same old story. He is just too good. He adapts to everyone and takes away every game plan. Canelo went in there hoping to cut off the ring and keep his jab out there followed by power combinations, but he could not hit Mayweather on a consistent basis. Like it does with everyone, around the midpoint of each fight, Canelo got frustrated in the ring; subsequently, game plans go out the window and frustration sets in. Canelo literally looked like a kid on the job site who had no clue of what to do once Mayweather went into cruise control.

This leads me to the punch line. If Mayweather fights all end up the same way and the end of the book never changes as mentioned previously by Gabreal Gallegos, why then do people continue to purchase overpriced tickets and PPV rentals? It’s an easy answer. It’s the hype! There is no hype like a Mayweather fight. It is because so many fans love to hate him. Bottom line though, he appreciates all fans, even the haters. I will be the first to admit, although I knew what the final result would be, I still could not resist the hype of “The One” and being a part of it in Las Vegas for Mexican Independence Day weekend.

I can’t tell you how many Canelo fans were in Las Vegas walking around with headbands and chanting “C.A.N.E.L.O.” in every casino I walked through. The strip had to have been 75% pro Canelo. They all had the hope their fighter would be “The One” to finally make the best fighter in the world look human. As always, hopes and dreams went down the drain once the first bell rang.

fansDespite all of the aforementioned, people continue to come out of pocket for a Mayweather event time after time, despite what they say after each fight. “I will never buy another Mayweather PPV,” “I will never attend another Mayweather fight because all he does is run,” “I am tired of contributing to Mayweather’s pocket, “The way he fights is boring.” LOL, the guy is just too good that the disgruntled fans get bored, and for the record, Mayweather fought the majority of the fight in the pocket; he did not run.

Despite what these disgruntled fans say, they will be a return customer. Once the hype and hysteria start again, either with a Canelo rematch, or the next up and coming fighter, people will again come out of pocket because there is the mystery and hope of “Will this be the time he gets caught or knocked out?” I hate to say it, but you can’t knock out what you can’t hit. Canelo will tell you that; just ask him. He hit the ropes harder than he hit his opponent.

I think deep down everyone, even the Canelo fans, ultimately knew what was going to happen. But even with that said, I was seeing people paying 200% over face value for tickets in the MGM lobby just hours before the fight. About an hour before the Matthysse and Garcia fight, I saw a fan pay $1500 for a second level nosebleed seat with a face value of $600. He was a Canelo fan . I am not going to say that I did not want to be there, because I did and I spent an entire day trying to find a ticket at the 11th hour. However, given I knew what was likely going to happen in the fight, I was not willing to pay more than face value for a ticket (also overpriced). Fortunately, I scored one about ten minutes before the start of the Matthysse vs. Garcia fight and was very happy to do so for face value. I knew the fight would go as they usually do; I bought my ticket strictly for the excitement of the hype and being around a charged fight crowd. You can’t beat it; it’s fun as long as you don’t have unrealistic expectations of a Mayweather fight.

So, to all you Mayweather critics, say what you want, but you will be back. I guarantee it.

  1. LOL, you are so so cruel!!! I also have fun with the fight at home my mom was for Canelo 100%, and myself with Maywheater. At the end she was saying how Mayweather did not stand toe to toe with Canelo, the reason is because his boxing skills!! Please paisanos we need to see the fights in an objective way, there was no way Canelo could beat Maywheater!! The only way was if Mayweather would get calambres in both legs, get blind on both eyes and broke both hands. Because if he had the use of one leg, one eye, and one hand he still would manage to beat Canelo.
